Faculty of Education Delegation Participated in the 2017 AERA Annual Meeting and Held a Reception Successfully Published:2017-05-17 17:09:56  Views:10

From April 27 to May 1, Dean Zhu Xudong led a delegation to attend the annual meeting of the American Education Research Association (AERA) in San Antonio. A joint reception co-hosted by Beijing Normal University and The University of Hong Kong was successfully held on the evening of April 28.

 

The theme of the annual meeting this year is "Knowledge to Action: Achieve the Promise of Equal Educational Opportunity". 2562 reporting groups and nearly 20,000 participants joined in this meeting. Seven FOE faculty members’ and five students' papers were received by the meeting. During the four-day meeting, the FOE delegates made nine reports in sections of group meetings, round tables and posters, and they received positive feedback from other participants.

During the AERA meeting, FOE BNU and the Faculty of Education at The University of Hong Kong successfully held a reception together at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center on the evening of April 28. About 300 guests attended the reception. Assistant Dean Liu Qiang hosted the reception. Dean Zhu Xudong and Prof. Stephen Andrews, Dean of Faculty of Education of The University of Hong Kong gave a speech respectively. The University of Hong Kong delegates included Prof. Lin Goodwin, Dean Designate of Faculty of Education, Prof. Ida Mok and Prof. Jan Van Aalst, Vice Dean of Faculty of Education. Besides, guests also included Professor Cheung Tung-ching, Former Vice-Chancellor of Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. Liang Xiangming, Dean of Faculty of Education of Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Ni Yuping, Vice-President of Faculty of Education, Prof. Robert Tierney, Dean of Faculty of Education ofthe University of Sydney, Prof.  Gerard Postiglione, Vice Dean of Faculty of Education of Hong Kong University and Visiting Professor of Beijing Normal University, Tina Besley, Vice Dean of Faculty of Education of Waikato University, and Michael A. Peters, the Chief Editor of Educational Philosophy and Theory, Prof. David Evans, Vice Dean of University of Sydney, Prof. Terry Mason, Dean of Faculty of Education of Indiana University, Prof. Di Xu from the University of California, Prof. Li Hui from the University of California, Prof. Zou Yali from the University of Houston, Professor Cao Li from the University of West Georgia, and many teachers, students and alumni of Beijing Normal University, as well as many national experts in the field of education. The joint reception disseminated the FOE academic achievements, expanded BNU’s oversea influence, promoted partnership with a legion of academic institutions and enhanced friendship with foreign scholars. It also publicized the latest policy on the introduction of overseas talents as well as the latest international exchange and cooperation programs.

During the meeting, Dean Zhu Xudong also met with 12 groups of colleagues from different colleges of education and carried out extensive talks on exchanges and cooperation.

 

On the morning of April 28, Dean Zhu Xudong attended the International Network of Education Institutes (INEI) breakfast meeting. He exchanged views with Dean or Dean Representatives of School of Education of University of Wisconsin Madison, Ontario Institute of Education of the University of Toronto and the National Institute of Education, Singapore on the construction of the network and the strengthening of academic and scientific research cooperation.

On the morning of April 28, Dean Zhu met with Dean Andrew Daire and Prof. Yaoying Xu from School of Education Virginia Commonwealth University. Both sides decided to work together on curriculum development in the fields of special education, educational leadership and school counseling, etc.

On the morning of April 28, Dean Zhu met with Prof. Iveta Silova, Director of Center for Advanced Studies in Global Education, Arizona State University Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. The discussion mainly focused on Belt and Road educational exchange issues.

On the afternoon of April 28, Dean Zhu, Assistant Dean Liu, Prof. Greg Misiazsek and Prof. Lauren Misiazsek met with Prof. Marcelo Suárez-Orzozc, Dean of UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, to discuss about strengthening and expanding collaboration.

 

On the afternoon of April 28, Dean Zhu and Assistant Dean Liu met with Dean Terry Mason from Indiana University School of Education. Both sides happily reviewed the contributions Prof. Ross, Prof. Zhou Zuoyu and Prof. Shi Zhongying had made for the existing collaboration, and proposed to collaborate on joint research and student exchange. Dean Mason will visit FOE in July and both sides will further discuss the details of cooperation.

On the evening of April 28, Director Wu Haitao met with Dr. Pemela Beach and Dr. Amanda Cooper from Queen's University. Both sides would continue the existing cooperation and further explore possible areas.

 

On the morning of April 29, Dean Zhu, Assistant Dean Liu and Prof. Lauren Misiazsek had a meeting with Assistant Dean Leslie W. Grant from College of William and Mary School of Education. Both sides exchanged views on collaboration on MA TESOL programs and explore the possibilities of working together on student practicum, educational leadership training and STEM education, etc.

On the morning of April 29, Dean Zhu Xudong and Assistant Dean Liu Qiang met with Professor McDougall, Vice Dean of the Ontario Institute of Education of University of Toronto, Canada. The two sides exchanged ideas on cooperative research and teacher exchanges.

On the morning of April 29, Dean Zhu Xudong and Assistant Dean Liu Qiang met with the delegation of Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong, including Dean Prof. Stephen Andrews, Dean Prof. Lin Goodwin, Associate Prof. Gerard Postiglione, Associate Dean Prof. Ida Mok, Dean Jan Van Aalst. The two sides reviewed the achievements of the three-year agreement, and gave a high evaluation of the joint reception. They checked the implementation of the agreement one by one, put forward some views of improvement, and decided to renew the agreement.

 

On the afternoon of April 29, Dean Zhu Xudong and Assistant Dean Liu Qiang met with Prof. Richard Arum, Dean of Faculty of Education of University of California Irvine, and Associate Prof. Di Xu. The two sides had a deep discussion on the student affairs management of higher education, student evaluation of large data collection and analysis as well as other aspects of cooperation. Dean Zhu Xu Dong invited Arum Dean and Associate Professor Di Xu to visit and meet with the relevant departments and teachers to discuss the cooperation matters.

On the evening of April 29, Dean Zhu Xudong and Assistant Dean Liu Qiang met with Prof. Zou Yali from the School of Education University of Houston, discussing some cooperative details of Sino-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools. The two sides expressed great confidence in this project.

 

On the morning of April 30, Dean Zhu Xudong and Assistant Dean Liu Qiang met with Prof. Peter Hlebowitsh of the University of Alabama and Prof. Randall Schumacker. The two sides agreed to expand faculty and student exchange and to establish a platform to promote teacher communication and cooperation projects. The two sides also discussed about the issues of two American professors' visits in June.
