    Bio

Dr. Greg William Misiaszek is an Associate Professor at Beijing Normal University’s (BNU), Faculty of Education, Theories of Education Institute. He also holds various positions, including Associate Director, Paulo Freire Institute, UCLA; Executive Editor of the Teaching in Higher Education: Critical Perspectives journal; Book Series Editor of Bloomsbury’s Freire in Focus (with Carlos Alberto Torres (UCLA)); and Editor of the Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Environmental Education (with Karen Malone (Swinburne University of Technology)). His work focuses on critical, comparative analysis of education, with specific emphasis on ecopedagogy, through theories of globalizations, citizenships, race, gender, migration, Indigenous issues, linguistics, epistemological justice, and media, among others. His most recently published book was in May 2023 (Bloomsbury) is Freire and Environmentalism: Ecopedagogy, targeted to a wider audience beyond the typical academic one - a key feature of the Freire in Focus short-length book series. His book Ecopedagogy: Critical Environmental Teaching for Planetary Justice and Global Sustainable Development (2020, Bloomsbury) deconstructs critical environmental learning and literacies (i.e., ecopedagogical literacies); while his 2018 book from Routledge, Educating the Global Environmental Citizen: Understanding Ecopedagogy in Local and Global Contexts, focuses on citizenships and environmental pedagogies. He has several edited books including the “Palgrave Handbook on Critical Theories” (Springer, 2023, Ali A. Abdi, University of British Columbia) and the Routledge book, Paulo Freire Centennial: Reinventing and Reinvigorating Freire (with Lauren Ila Misiaszek, BNU). He is currently working on a Routledge Book “Ecopedagogy and Global Environmental Citizen: Critical Issues, Trends, Challenges and Possibilities” and working on the edited book “Handbook of Ecological Civilization: Concept, Philosophy, Pedagogy” with Michael A. Peters, Benjamin Green, and Xudong Zhu. Dr. Misiaszek holds a Ph.D. from UCLA in Comparative Education, M.S. in education (University of Southern California (USC)), and B.S. from USC in Environmental Studies.
