To scale up collaboration among BRICS countries in different areas, BRICS University President Forum was held in Beijing Normal University from October 17 to 18, 2015. At the closing ceremony of the forum, the BRICS University League was founded, which symbolized the establishment of an exchange platform for in-depth research among the BRICS countries.

The BRICS University President Forum included president roundtables and 5 panel sessions, among which, the Education Panel Session was hosted by the Faculty of Education. The theme was New Challenges, New Responses: Higher Education Reform of BRICS in the 21st Century. Vice Dean of Faculty of Education, Prof. LI Jiayong hosted the opening ceremony of the Education Panel Session.

A keynote presentation followed after all the representatives gave remarks. The keynote speaker was Mr. Andreas Schleicher, Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), who presented on the title of Benchmarking Higher Education Internationally. He raised four key questions: Is there no end to the expansion of higher education? How successful do institutions engage with evolving learning needs? Who can make a systemic difference to closing skills gaps? Can we extend mass education for some to personalized learning for all? By collecting and analyzing substantial amount of data, he came to the conclusions that more people benefit from education than ever before, but degrees don’t always equal skills, and education and skills both contribute to better social outcomes. He hoped that data analysis would be used more widely in higher education research.
