Professor William F. Pinar's Lectures Published:2013-09-29 15:31:12  Views:10

Professor William F. Pinar came to BNU from 23rd to 28th of Sept, 2013, giving speech to FOE, which is assisted by Institute of Curriculum and Pedagogy, whose deputy director Professor Qi Chunxia accompanied with Pinar as an interpreter.

At 9:00am on 24th of Sept, Pinar gave a lecture theme on The End of Public Education in The United States to teachers, doctors and masters from Institute of Curriculum and Pedagogy including the director Wang Benlu, teachers as Kan Wei, Cong Lixin, Liang Wei and so on. The lecture talks about the role of technology in Education. People always ignore the negative influences of Tech when pursuing profits and effectiveness. Pinar reminds us to recognize the blue side of Tech, which is destroying the significance of education. After the lecture, audiences raise questions on education, curriculum, educational technology, teachers and students, which are answered by Pinar patiently and professionally.

At 3:00pm on 24th of Sept, Pinar with teachers from Institute of Curriculum and Pedagogy held a forum discoursing curriculum in Room 105, Teaching building NO.2. Many doctors and master interested in curriculum attended this forum and asked questions passionately. Pinar discoursed issues about developing curriculum, training teachers, understanding curriculum, applying technology, combining subjects and so on with teachers as Professor Cong Lixin, associate Professor Hu Dingrong and Yi Jin. More questions were discoursed in this forum, among which Pinar emphasizes that standard text on students is definitely a disaster for all of students and teachers especially the whole country, which erased personality of students and passion of teachers even the energy of country. Pinar encouraged teachers to conduct conversation with students, understand students’ thoughts, and inspire them to learn by heart.

At 9:00am on 26th of Sept, Pinar gave another lecture The First Task of Thought for teachers and students from FOE as well as principles from BIE (Beijing Institute of Education). It was a deep and thoughtful lecture revealing the nature of thought in philosophy. In Pinar’s opinion, the first task of thought in our time is to think what technology is. People’s diversity and freedom are challenging by Tech, which are marching into education resulting in ruining the individuality of students. Learning this lecture, principles, teachers and students asked many questions to Pinar, referring to what is good curriculum; is there any difference when facing technology among countries; how can teachers do to help students avoid the persecution by Tech and so on. In the end Pinar concluded his lesson with, “To put the matter in a popular way, justice is an unchanging measure of all our times and places, and our love of it defines us. It is our love of justice that inspires us to exceed what technology has made of us.”

Time flies fast. We experience a wonderful time with Pinar. He is nice and patient to leaners. Yet one week is too short for us to learn about Pinar and his theory. We look forward to his coming in the near future.
